What is the Gold Coast known for?
When people think of the Gold Coast, they often envision theme parks, lively nightlife, party scenes and high-rise buildings along the coastline.
However, the Gold Coast offers much more than these attractions.
It is renowned for its iconic Australian beaches, world-class surfing events, luxurious resorts, picturesque waterfalls like Purling Brook Falls, and expansive national parks such as Springbrook National Park.

How long to visit the Gold Coast?
For your first trip to the Gold Coast, we recommend a minimum 5-day stay. Ideally, 7–14 days gives you a much more relaxed experience, especially if you want to explore the hinterland, national parks, and still have time to actually unwind.
If you want a realistic breakdown of how to structure your days, our Gold Coast itinerary maps this out in detail and makes planning much easier.
- Short trip (2-3 days): Focus on one or two beaches, visit a theme park, and enjoy the food and bar scene.
- Medium trip (4-7 days): Explore multiple beaches, visit one or two theme parks, head into the hinterland, and fit in shopping and dining.
- Long trip (1-2 weeks): Travel at a slower pace, explore all the beaches, visit every theme park, try activities like surfing and hiking, take day trips to nearby regions, or simply relax at your accommodation.
When is the best time to visit the Gold Coast?
You can’t go wrong when choosing the best time to visit the Gold Coast, each season offers something unique.
If we had to recommend our favourite times to visit, it would be April/May or September/October, as they offer beautiful, sunny weather without the peak crowds.
Season breakdown:
Summer (December to February): The Gold Coast is hottest and most humid during these months, often exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. The beaches are usually crowded, and frequent summer storms with high rainfall.
Autumn (March – May): Autumn brings dry and comfortable temperatures, ranging from 18 – 25 degrees Celsius. It’s an ideal time for enjoying beaches and outdoor activities.
Winter (June – August): The Gold Coast experiences relatively mild winter temperatures, ranging from 11 – 21 degrees Celsius, compared to other parts of Australia.
The winter clear days often showcase stunning sunrises and sunsets, and it’s an excellent season for whale watching as humpback whales migrate along the coast.
Spring (September – November): Similar to Autumn, Spring offers dry weather with temperatures ranging from 16 – 25 degrees Celsius; it’s perfect for outdoor activities like surfing and hiking in the hinterland.
Important things to note when visiting the Gold Coast
- If you’re planning a family holiday or relaxing getaway with your partner, we recommend avoiding the schoolies period, typically this is in late November to early December when thousands of high school graduates flock to the area to celebrate.
- If you are planning on visiting the Gold Coast Hinterland, temperatures tend to be cooler compared to the coastal areas. Even during summer, we would recommend packing warm clothes.
Why should you visit the Gold Coast?
With over 300 sunny days a year, the Gold Coast is one of Australia’s best holiday destinations!
Whether you are seeking pristine beaches, the adrenaline of theme parks, the natural beauty of the hinterland, or the diversity of its vibrant dining scene, the Gold Coast has something special to offer for every traveller.

Best things to do in Gold Coast
There are so many amazing things to do on the Gold Coast, even if you visit for a month, you will never be bored.
Visit the pristine beaches
The Gold Coast is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in Queensland, so make sure you schedule some time to hit the beach.
If you’re visiting during the summer months, ensure you wear sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses!
There are many patrolled beaches on the Gold Coast to swim safely.
Our favourite beaches include:
- Rainbow Bay & Greenmount Beach
- Burleigh Beach
- Coolangatta Beach
- Palm Beach
- Kirra Beach
- Tallebudgera Creek

Hike the Burleigh Heads National Park
The Burleigh Headland walk is our favourite walk on the Gold Coast, and we highly recommend you experience it too!
Begin the walk at the northern entrance, at the top of Burleigh Hill, where you have two route options: the ocean track or the rainforest circuit.
For a complete experience, we suggest starting with the rainforest circuit and returning via the ocean view track or vice versa.
Follow the Burleigh Link Track to Jebbribillum Lookout and onto the rainforest circuit towards Tumgun Lookout. Stay on the path until you reach the Tallebudgera Link Track, where you’ll find the ocean view track.
Take the ocean view track back towards Burleigh. This 1.2km coastal path along Tallebudgera Creek to Burleigh takes approximately 30 minutes.
Make sure you bring your camera, there are amazing spots to grab some photos of the city skyline, rainforest and surfers.

Check out the 360-degree views from the tallest building in Australia
Ride the elevator up 77 floors to enjoy breathtaking views from the observation deck of the Q1 tower.
One of the most popular Gold Coast tourist attractions, the Q1 building stands 322 metres tall, with the SkyPoint Observation Deck situated 230 metres above sea level.
If you’re looking to step it up a notch, book a sky point climb that takes you to a platform 270 meters above sea level to soak in the panoramic 360-degree views of the city and hinterland.
Alternatively, if that’s not your thing, visit in the afternoon to relax with a drink from the bar and witness the stunning sunset transforming the sky with vibrant colours.

Visit HOTA (Home of the Arts)
We were pleasantly surprised by HOTA, even though we’re not typically into art!
Located in Surfers Paradise, HOTA serves as a central hub for a variety of artistic and cultural activities, seamlessly blending art, entertainment, culture, and lifestyle.
The parklands and certain gallery exhibitions are open to the public FREE of charge.
While you’re there, make sure to visit the Exhibitionist Bar, it was a highlight of our visit to HOTA. We believe it could be one of the best hidden gems for taking in the views of the city skyline while enjoying a coffee, lunch, dinner or cocktail.

Springbrook National Park
Springbrook National Park is located in the Gondwana Rainforest, approximately a 55-minute drive from the city and 100 kilometres south of Brisbane. Making it a great spot for a day trip from the Gold Coast.
Known for its stunning waterfalls, lush rainforest and ancient trees. Popular attractions include the Nature Bridge, Purling Brook Falls, Twin Falls and numerous hiking trails.
If waterfalls are high on your to do list, we’ve put together a full breakdown of the best Springbrook waterfalls, including which walks and lookouts are worth visiting and our honest tips to help you plan the perfect day.

Lamington National Park
Lamington National Park is also another great day trip from the Gold Coast, located in the Gondwana Rainforest, about a 55-minute drive from the city and 105 kilometres south of Brisbane.
Known for its extensive subtropical and temperate rainforests, scenic waterfalls and rugged mountain terrain.
Popular attractions include Moran Falls, Elabana Falls, Coomera Falls, Binna Burra Trail and visiting O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat.

Mount Tamborine
Mount Tamborine is another great day trip if you are looking to escape the hustle and bustle.
Mount Tamborine is located about 45 minutes inland from the Gold Coast city and 70 kilometres south of Brisbane.
Mount Tamborine is one of our favourite places to visit whilst on the Gold Coast.
You can explore beautiful waterfalls like Curtis Falls and Cedar Creek Falls, experience the Tamborine Rainforest skywalk, take a stroll down the Gallery Walk, enjoy a wine at stunning wineries like Witches Falls winery and make sure you grab a baguette from Franquettes.
Tallebudgera Creek
If you’re looking for one of the most relaxing places to swim on the Gold Coast, Tallebudgera Creek is the perfect spot!
Located next to the Burleigh Heads National Park, the sparkling creek and shady banks make it a popular spot for families and water sports.
We had so much fun hiring a stand-up paddleboard and exploring the creek.
If you get hungry, head over to Custard Canteen for good coffee and delicious Portuguese tarts.

Learn to surf
Learning to surf is one of the best things to do on the Gold Coast, and it’s one of the easiest places in Australia to learn.
There are plenty of surf schools to choose from, but for beginners, we highly recommend starting in Coolangatta, where the waves are more forgiving and the beaches are less hectic.

Hot air balloon
For a truly unforgettable Gold Coast experience, a hot air balloon flight at sunrise gives you a completely different perspective of the region.
You’ll float above the hinterland as the sun comes up, with 360-degree views stretching across the mountains, farmland, beaches, and city skyline.

Best beaches on the Gold Coast
When deciding what to do on the Gold Coast, visiting the beaches is always a good idea, and there are plenty to choose from.
Burleigh Heads
A crowd favourite for locals and tourists, offering the perfect beach to spend the day.
Take a stroll up the headland for a view of the surfers or explore James Street to check out the boutique shops and dining options.
Broadbeach
Located right next door to Surfers Paradise but with a more relaxed vibe, Broadbeach is a great beach, surrounded by lots of accommodation choices and a variety of restaurants.
Main Beach
Located at the northern tip of the Gold Coast, Main Beach is bustling with activity and is popular for swimming, surfing and sunbathing.
Mermaid Beach
Located between Broadbeach and Miami, Mermaid Beach is a local favourite, as it is laid-back with excellent surf conditions.
Don’t miss admiring the ‘millionaire mile’ along Hedge Avenue!
Palm Beach
One of our top picks on the Gold Coast, Palm Beach, is perfect for peaceful morning beach walks and stunning sunset views, minus the crowds.
Currumbin Alley
A renowned surfing spot on the Gold Coast, Currumbin Beach is located at the mouth of Currumbin Creek, which makes it perfect for families and kids.
Make sure you check out the rock formations on the beach with the city in the background, or visit the beachfront cafes for a bite to eat or a drink.
Tallebudgera Creek
It’s not technically a ‘beach’, but we had to include it in our Gold Coast travel guide.
Tallebudgera Creek is a beautiful turquoise creek located next to Burleigh Headland National Park.
You can swim on either side of the creek; the north side is perfect to escape the crowds, while the south side is usually more crowded but has a larger car park.
If you check out the south side, be sure to get a coffee and Portuguese tart from the Custard canteen.

Greenmount and Rainbow Bay
Our two favourite beaches on the Gold Coast. They are often quieter than other beaches on the Gold Coast and have crystal-clear water and white sand.
Make sure you go for a walk along the coastline and up to Rainbow Bay look out for beautiful views across the water with the city skyline in the background.

Kirra Beach
When we visit the Gold Coast, we can’t help but drive past Kirra Beach, it’s one of our favourite places to watch surfers.
Check out Kirra Hill’s lookout, only a short walk from the beach, for panoramic views of the ocean and skyline.

Waterfalls near the Gold Coast to visit
One of our favourite things to do on the Gold Coast is to go on a waterfall adventure. The Gold Coast region is spoilt for choice when it comes to waterfalls.
Purling Brook Falls
It is one of the most breathtaking waterfalls we have ever witnessed, located in the Gondwana Rainforest within Springbrook National Park, just a 55-minute drive from the Gold Coast city.
Purling Brook Falls stands tall at 106 metres and offers the best views from the bottom of the falls.
To reach the base, take the 4km circuit (it’s worth it!!), which takes approximately 2 hours depending on your fitness level.
If time is limited or you prefer not to hike, you can still enjoy views of the falls from the lookout just a few minutes from the car park.
If there has been recent rain, we would highly recommend wearing boots or spraying bug repellent on your shoes, as there may be leeches on the track (don’t let this stop you, though).

Twin Falls Waterfall
This waterfall walk is one of our favourites, especially after decent rain! Twin Falls is also located in the Gondwana Rainforest in the Springbrook National Park.
Walking down to Twin Falls is an adventure in itself. During our visit in March, following recent rain, the path took us through numerous cascading falls.
The walk to Twin Falls is much shorter and easier than Purlingbrook Falls, only a 1.8km round trip, making it perfect for families with young kids.
Upon reaching the base, be sure to walk behind the falls and, if you’re up for it, take a refreshing swim in the cold water.
This walk is worth adding to your Gold Coast trip!

The Natural Bridge
For those seeking a shorter walk in Springbrook National Park, the Natural Bridge walk is perfect, only 1km and ideal for families.
This captivating natural rock formation and waterfall are located in the western part of Springbrook National Park, approximately a 1.5-hour drive from the Gold Coast city.
This cave-like structure has formed over millions of years by water erosion and is surrounded by ancient rainforests.
If you are staying in Spring Brook National Park, don’t miss the opportunity to see the glow worms inside the cave at night – it is a beautiful experience.
Please note that you can’t swim at this waterfall.
Curtis Falls
Another picturesque waterfall is located in Tamborine National Park, approximately an hour’s drive from the city.
To access Curtis Falls, take the short 1 km walk through the rainforest to the viewing platform.
We recommend arriving early in the morning to avoid crowds.
If you’re lucky, you might spot turtles sunbathing on fallen logs or catch a glimpse of the local platypus.
Please note that you can’t swim in the falls, but trust us, the walk down is still worth it.

Cedar Creek Falls
Also located in the Tamborine Mountain National Park, Cedar Creek Falls is a hidden gem known for its cascading falls down a rock face into a rock pool.
Allow about 15 minutes to walk to the Cedar Creek lookout and rock pools.
Surrounded by rainforest, Cedar Creek Falls offers a peaceful setting for a swim and to appreciate the beauty of the national park.

Currumbin Rock Pools
One of the most popular freshwater swimming spots on the Gold Coast, Currumbin Rockpools are surrounded by lush rainforests, offering a nice escape from the hustle and bustle.
One of the best things about these rockpools is that they are easy to access via a short walk from the designated parking area, though they do get busy!
Located just a 15-minute drive from Currumbin Beach, it makes for an ideal spot to enjoy a refreshing swim, a picnic, or a BBQ.
Elabana Falls
Located in the heart of the Lamington National Park, in the Green Mountains section, about 55 minutes from the city.
Reaching Elabana Falls requires a 7.5-kilometre (return) hike, which takes approximately 1.5 hours each way, plus time to swim – so make sure you bring plenty of water and snacks!
Take the Box Forest Circuit (10.9 km), but return on the same path if you’re only heading to Elabana Falls.
The waterfall features a series of cascading waterfalls flowing down a rock face into a rock pool below, surrounded by lush rainforest. It makes for a picturesque place to swim.

Moran Falls
Also located in Lamington National Park, approximately 1.5 hours from the Gold Coast city.
The 4.4km walk to Moran Falls is relatively easy and should take around 1.5 hours to complete
We highly recommend visiting at sunset to experience the sunset over the hinterland.
Sit and take in the views from the top of the waterfall, but be extremely careful!
Best day trips from the Gold Coast
If you are eager to explore the surrounding areas, there are plenty of day trips from the Gold Coast:
Byron Bay, NSW – Located 90 kilometres south of the Gold Coast, Byron Bay is known for picturesque beaches, excellent surfing conditions and the iconic Byron Lighthouse on Australia’s easternmost point.
Kingscliff, NSW – A short 30-minute drive south of the Gold Coast, Kingscliff offers a relaxed beach town experience with amazing beaches perfect for swimming and relaxing.
Cabarita Beach, NSW – One of our favourite beach towns, we randomly stumbled across one day. Cabarita Beach is an ideal spot for surfing and swimming. If you have the time, be sure to check out the scenic headland walk.
Brunswick Heads, NSW – Approximately 80 kilometres south of the Gold Coast, Brunswick Heads provides a peaceful escape with beautiful beaches, a river for swimming and fishing, and plenty of trendy cafes to explore.
Brisbane, QLD – For a taste of city life, Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, is about 80 kilometres north of the Gold Coast. Enjoy outdoor activities along the Brisbane River, as well as shopping and dining experiences at places like South Bank or Queen Street Mall.

Where to watch sunrise and sunset on the Gold Coast
If there’s one thing you take from this Gold Coast travel guide, let it be watching a sunrise and sunset!
Even if you are not typically an early riser, get yourself a coffee from one of the local coffee shops and make your way to the beach, we promise you it will be worth it.
Our favourite places to see sunrise:
Currumbin Beach
A beautiful place to start the day, whether you’re strolling along the beach or admiring the sunrise from Elephant Rock Lookout as the sky changes colours.
Palm Beach
Another relaxing place to watch the sunrise unfold above the horizon.
Whether you’re taking an early morning ocean dip like we did, taking a leisurely walk, or simply sitting on one of the benches and taking it all in, it is the perfect way to start your day!

Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach
Both are iconic places to catch the sunrise. Walk along the esplanade, enjoy a stroll on the beach or relax at one of the beach cafes with a coffee in hand as you witness the beginning of a new day on the Gold Coast.
Our favourite places to see the sunset:
Snapper Rocks
One of the most iconic spots to watch the sunset on the Gold Coast.
We love watching the surfers catch their last waves as the sun sets and the sky transforms.
Because of the direction the beach is facing, it creates a unique setting where it looks like the sun is setting over the water (which is rare for the East Coast), even though it is setting behind the hinterland.

Burleigh Hill
A local favourite, especially on the weekends. Find a spot on the grassy hill or among the rocks, bring a picnic rug, and soak up the lively atmosphere with friends and family as the sun sets.
It is also an awesome spot to watch surfers enjoying their evening waves with the city skyline in the background.
Kirra Point
Similar to Snapper Rock, Kirra Point offers another amazing sunset spot.
Here, you can watch the sun setting on the water and behind the hinterland while surfers ride into the sunset.
Take a moment to pause and soak up all the beauty during the golden hour here, it is truly something special.

Moran Falls
As we mentioned earlier, Moran Falls is such a rewarding place to experience the sunset over the hinterland.

Where to stay on the Gold Coast
Choosing where to stay on the Gold Coast can feel overwhelming. Each area has a very different vibe, and the “best” spot really comes down to how you want your trip to feel.
For a more laid-back, local feel, we love Coolangatta, Palm Beach, and Burleigh Heads. These areas are walkable, close to great cafes and beaches, and don’t feel overly touristy.
If you’re not hiring a car, we’d prioritise Burleigh Heads or Coolangatta, where you can easily get around on foot or by bike.
If you want big attractions, nightlife, and easy access to tours, Surfers Paradise or Broadbeach are better suited.
Here are our top accommodation picks across different budgets and travel styles.

The only true beachfront resort on the Gold Coast, Sheraton Grand Mirage is all about relaxed luxury.
Think lagoon-style pools, lush gardens, direct beach access, spacious rooms, and excellent dining, all without the chaos of Surfers Paradise.

Best for: Couples, nature lovers, unique Gold Coast stays

Airbnb Style: Crystal Pacific, Palm Beach
If you prefer apartment-style accommodation, Crystal Pacific is a great pick in Palm Beach.
Fully equipped apartments, a swimming pool, bunk beds for kids, and walking distance to Palm Beach, cafes, and Tallebudgera Creek make it ideal for longer stays.
Best for: Families, longer trips, self-contained stays

For Families: Paradise Resort Gold Coast, Surfers Paradise
While we don’t have kids ourselves, Paradise Resort is consistently recommended for families.
There’s an ice skating rink, waterpark, kids club, daily activities, and entertainment, plus accommodation options for groups of up to eight.
Best for: Families travelling with kids
Best places to eat in the Gold Coast
The Tropic, Burleigh Heads
Our favourite place to dine on the Gold Coast, and that’s saying something!
Not only does it have some of the best views on the Gold Coast, but the food is exceptional.
We would highly recommend booking a table in advance, as this place gets super busy, especially if you want to come for sunset!
And whatever you do, don’t miss out on trying the puffed bread!

The Collective, Palm Beach
A unique dining experience where multiple kitchens operate under one roof, allowing you to try a variety of cuisines, which is so fun!
It’s the perfect place for group outings, as everyone can choose their favourite dish from different cuisines.

Billy Chow, Kirra Beach

We were thoroughly impressed with the vibrant atmosphere and delicious food, especially the Bao buns!

Miami Marketta, Miami
For a fun night out with friends or your partner, Miami Marketta is a must-visit on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights starting at 5 pm.
It is FREE to enter and features a lively open-air dining area with a diverse selection of street food stalls from different parts of the world and live music.

Cucina Vivo, Broadbeach
If you’re a fan of authentic Italian like us, Cucina Vivo at The Star (Gold Coast Casino) is your go-to place.
Serving simple yet delicious traditional dishes made with high-quality ingredients.
We had one of the best Italian pizzas we ever tasted in Australia here.

Kirra Beach House, Kirra Beach
A relatively new addition to the Gold Coast, Kirra Beach House offers a laid-back rooftop terrace with stunning views of Kirra Beach, perfect for groups.
The Mediterranean-inspired menu features a variety of mouthwatering options, we especially loved the Bug Rolls and Kingfish Ceviche.

Best Gold Coast Cafes
The Paddock Bakery, Burleigh Heads
Whenever we are on the Gold Coast, The Paddock Bakery is a must-visit.
Not only does their menu feature a wide variety of delicious choices, but the atmosphere in this renovated Queenslander is so cute and feels like you are in a farmhouse far from the Gold Coast.
The only drawback is that they don’t take reservations, so arriving early is key to avoiding long queues, especially on the weekends or during the holidays.
Make sure you try one of their freshly baked goods – we loved the caramilk cookie!

Tarte Bakery & Cafe, Burleigh Heads
A favourite among locals and tourists, Tarte Bakery is nestled in the heart of Burleigh Heads and is known for its delicious pastries, freshly baked bread and superb coffee!!
We highly recommend trying their bagels and chicken sandwich, you will not be disappointed.

Tarte Bakery & Cafe, Currumbin
Located in a different but equally charming location, Tarte Bakery & Cafe in Currumbin offers the same delicious options as its Burleigh cafe, along with a more refined lunch venue and an extensive alcohol selection with views over the crystal-clear waters of Currumbin.
Custard Canteen, Tallebudgera Creek
For those craving sunshine and outdoor vibes, Custard Canteen is the perfect cafe choice, just steps away from Tallebudgera Creek.
During our recent trip to the Gold Coast, we took a scenic walk via the Burleigh Headland Walk over the bridge to Custard Canteen.
It was the perfect spot to enjoy breakfast and a coffee (one of the best we had on our trip). We recommend trying their famous Portuguese tarts, we love them!
If you have the chance, we recommend visiting their sister cafe, Cubby Bakehouse, located along the Tweed River in Chinderah.

Bam Bam Bakehouse, Mermaid Waters
One of the most popular bakeries and cafes on the Gold Coast, Bam Bam Bakehouse has a reputation for its incredible pastries, artisan bread and delicious coffee.
Be sure to try the Bam Bam Benny – eggs Benedict on a croissant, or opt for something refreshing like the Acai bowl with housemade granola.
