11 BEST Day Trips from Townsville
1. Magnetic Island
We think it would be a crime to visit Townsville without taking a day trip to Magnetic Island.
Since moving here, Magnetic Island has quickly become one of our favourite places to visit near Townsville.
Located just 8km offshore from Townsville, Magnetic Island is easily accessible by a 20-minute ferry ride.
Magnetic Island offers so many fun experiences, from beautiful secluded bays and beaches to amazing hiking trails. It’s home to an abundance of wildlife, including koalas and rock wallabies.
One of our most memorable experiences was hiring a Magnetic Island Barbie car to explore the island with our family. Moments like this are truly unique to Magnetic Island!
While we highly recommend hiring a car from one of the many reputable car hire companies or a scooter or E-bike to explore the island, you can also catch the public bus that takes you to all the main attractions.
Here are some of our favourite things to do on Magnetic Island
- Spot Koalas on the Forts Walk
- See the Rock Wallabies at Geoffrey Bay
- Swim at Alma Bay
- Snorkel at Florence Bay and Arthur Bay
- Spot the S.S Adelaide Shipwreck
- Watch the Sunset at Hawkings Point Lookout
- Visit Maggie Island Brewery
- Enjoy the great cafes & restaurants on the island
- Take a sunset sailing cruise
- Explore the Three Bays Walk
Whether you’re enjoying a relaxing swim at Alma Bay or sipping a cold brew at Maggie Island Brewery, you will see why Magnetic Island has captured our hearts!
If you’d prefer your day trip to Magnetic Island sorted for you, there is a great range of island tours available, from snorkelling tours, comprehensive tours on land to sunset tours.
2. Paluma Range National Park
Paluma Range National Park is another place that you need to add to your list of things to do near Townsville!
Nestled in the lush rainforests of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, this park is located about an hour’s drive North of Townsville and is suitable for all vehicles.
Paluma Range National Park offers an array of waterfalls and hiking trails to explore for all fitness levels.
The best time to visit Paluma Range National Park is after the wet season when the waterfalls are overflowing with water.
One of our favourite activities in the National Park is sliding down the rockslides at Big Crystal Creek – there’s nothing quite like the rush of adrenaline as you get some air and splash into the cool water (and maybe bruise your butt a bit).
It’s experiences like this that make North Queensland such a special place to visit.
The village of Paluma itself is a charming town to visit, with quaint cottages, cafes and a sense of tranquillity that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Here are some of our favourite things to do in Paluma Range National Park
- Explore the rock pools and lookouts at Jourama Falls
- Check out Paradise Waterhole at Big Crystal Creek
- Have fun going down the rock slide at Big Crystal Creek
- Rock jumping at Little Crystal Creek
- Exploring Ethel Creek Falls
- Enjoying the peace at Birthday Creek Falls
- Check out the views at McClelland’s Lookout
Before visiting, we highly recommend stopping at the grocery shop to pick up snacks, water and a picnic lunch to enjoy during your visit.

3. Wallaman Falls
If visiting the tallest waterfall in Australia is on your bucket list, this is your opportunity!
Townsville to Wallaman Falls is about a 2-hour drive north of Townsville.
Wallaman Falls is in the Girringun National Park which is also part of the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area so it really does make for an epic day trip from Townsville.
This is one of the most incredible places to visit in North Queensland, we would even consider it to be the best waterfall in Australia, not only for its size but also the beautiful gorge and lush rainforest surrounding it.
Standing tall at an impressive 268 metres, Wallaman Falls is a sight to witness, especially during the wet season (October – April) when it roars with its powerful force. Be sure to bring wet weather gear if you visit during this time.
During our visit at the end of March, we were blessed with perfect sunny weather. We stayed at Wallaman Falls Camping Area, which we highly recommend for anyone who wants to immerse themselves in the area for a little longer.
For the best experience, we recommend timing your visit in the morning to witness the gorge at its most breathtaking. You might even catch a rainbow spanning across the waterfall, as we did.
Avoid afternoon walks due to early sunsets; you wouldn’t want to trek back in the dark.
To view the waterfall, we recommend exploring both options available. Option one is a short walk from the car park to the lookout, offering incredible views of the waterfall, gorge and surrounding rainforest.
Option two involves a bit more effort but is completely worth it! Take the Djyinda Walk down to the base of the falls (3.2km return). This track can be slippery, so take your time.
As you approach the base, you’ll catch glimpses and hear the thunderous sound of the waterfall.
The base of the falls offers a perspective unlike any other, making you feel tiny in comparison to the waterfall and gorge.
Take time to soak up the incredible natural beauty before making the trek back up to the car park. While challenging, the climb is manageable for most with moderate fitness levels – just pace yourself.
Before heading out to Wallaman Falls, we highly recommend stocking up on fuel, food and water in Ingham as the area is remote with no reception.
It’s important to note that the roads become narrow, winding and steep, so it’s advised to avoid taking caravans or trailers. The TYTO Information and Wetlands Centre in Ingham allows you to leave your caravan or trailer for the day.

7. Alligator Creek
A local favourite, Alligator Creek is located just 25 km South of Townsville and is one of our favourite day trips from Townsville. It offers a peaceful escape without the need to travel far.
Located in the Bowling Green Bay National Park, Alligator Creek, despite its name, is free from alligators and crocodiles.
The walk to the swimming hole and lookout is an easy 400 metres from the car park.
This area offers a shallow swimming spot, perfect for families and young kids, as well as rapids (only after rain) further up which are so fun to float down the creek.
The park also has picnic tables (some sheltered), electric barbeques and toilet facilities near the car park, making it convenient for a day trip.
For those up for an adventure, tackle the Alligator Creek Falls track. This is a 16.4km (return) hike that takes you through creek crossings to an infinity pool, offering a reward but very challenging hike.

Cardwell Spa Pools, located approximately 2 hours north of Townsville, is a must-visit for anyone exploring the area. This swimming hole is a true hidden gem in North Queensland.
The water is a vibrant turquoise-blue colour, resulting from the unique mineral composition of the water and the white granite creek bed. It is the perfect place to soak in the serene setting.
The best time to visit is in the dry season (May to October), as heavy rain can make the water less clear.
This swimming hole is shallow, making it perfect for a refreshing swim. Be sure to add Cardwell Spa Pools to your list of amazing day trips from Townsville.

Located about 200km south of Townsville, Bowen is known as the northern jewel of The Whitsundays, just 45 minutes north of Airlie Beach.
Our favourite thing about Bowen is all the amazing beaches and crystal clear water, our favourites include:
- Horseshoe Bay Beach
- Murray Bay
- Rose Bay
- Kings Beach
- Greys bay
Take a drive up Flagship Hill Lookout for beautiful views of the coastline, islands and coral sea and don’t forget to bring your camera!
