Starting from Cairns city, here are all the best places to visit and things to do on this scenic drive alongside the Coral Sea.

Cairns

Since this scenic drive starts in Cairns, you may be planning your travels and activities in Cairns beforehand, so we want to help you make the most of your time there.

There are plenty of things to do in Cairns, from starting your morning right with a coffee and a stroll along the Esplanade to visiting Australia’s newest and most impressive aquarium.

Here are some top things to do and see while in Cairns:

Kuranda Village

Just outside Cairns city is the small rainforest village of Kuranda.

A must-do on any Cairns itinerary is taking the Skyrail or the Scenic Railway up to this rainforest village.

We recommend taking the Skyrail up to Kuranda, gliding over the ancient World Heritage-listed rainforest and passing by the magnificent Barron Falls (if there has been decent rainfall). Then, take the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway back down, passing through the lush rainforest!

We recommend booking your Skyrail and Scenic Railway ticket together

Kuranda village is a walkable town with plenty of little shops to explore, local markets, and great eateries.

Cairns Northern Beaches: Trinity Beach – Kewarra Beach – Clifton Beach

The northern beaches of Cairns are known for their laid-back atmosphere and small communities. Often not filled with tourists, these beaches are enjoyed by locals who spend their weekends at the beach or start or end their day with a walk along the shoreline.

Trinity Beach offers a relaxed vibe, perfect for swimming or just unwinding on the beach. The beach is patrolled year-round and has a stinger net during stinger season. It’s also a popular spot for a stroll along the waterfront with a few great restaurants and cafes.

Kewarra Beach is a quieter spot, ideal for those looking to escape the crowds and enjoy some peace and tranquillity. It’s a favourite among locals for walking dogs and fishing from the shoreline.

Clifton Beach is similar to Palm Cove but without the busyness, restaurants, and accommodations. It has a palm-fringed shoreline, making it a great spot for a walk or a relaxing day on the beach.

You can also walk or ride between Clifton Beach and Palm Cove. We had a great time riding our bikes between the two towns.

Palm Cove

Palm Cove is a very popular, picturesque beachside town, and in our opinion, it’s popular for good reason.

  • Walk along the Palm Cove beach and jetty
  • Stay at luxury resorts
  • Indulge at the many top beachfront cafes and restaurants
  • Swim in the ocean, there is a stinger net here during stinger season

OUR #1 TRAVEL CHARGER

Ellis Beach

Just a few kilometers north of Palm Cove, the beachside drive begins with Ellis Beach, a hidden gem.

This picturesque, palm-lined beach offers plenty of space to find your own quiet spot.

If you’re feeling hungry, the Ellis Beach Bar and Grill is a popular spot to eat.

For those wanting to stay a bit longer, there are campsites and oceanfront bungalows available. However, they are often booked out, so definitely look into booking in advance.

Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures

This popular wildlife park is a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts. Here, you can see crocodiles up close, take a boat cruise on Hartley’s Lagoon, and learn about the local wildlife.

It’s a fascinating and educational stop that’s perfect for families and anyone interested in native Australian wildlife.

Rex Lookout

Rex Lookout is consistently busy, and for good reason, the views of the Coral Sea and the coastline are simply stunning on a clear day.

Often, you’ll also see people hang gliding and paragliding from the lookout, which adds to the experience. We really enjoyed watching it, and it’s definitely worth the quick stop.

Thala Beach Nature Reserve

Thala Beach Nature Reserve is the iconic Tropical North Queensland coconut tree plantation photo spot.

The reserve itself is a peaceful, eco-friendly resort that blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings.

Even if you’re not staying there, it’s worth stopping by to enjoy the atmosphere and capture that coconut tree pic.

Crocodile Viewpoint – Mowbray River

Although it’s not 100% guaranteed you’ll see one, this Crocodile Viewpoint is a great spot to see crocodiles in the wild.

It’s a safe and accessible location where you can observe them sunbaking in the distance.

For the best chance to see one, try to time your visit during low tide (We’ve added the location of this viewpoint on the map further up in this post.)
