The Best Things To Do In Townsville

1. Walk Up Castle Hill

It is hard to miss Townsville’s most prominent landmark, Castle Hill is a 286-meter-high granite monolith located in the heart of the city, offering 360-degree views from its summit.

We believe a visit to the top of Castle Hill is a must on your Townsville Itinerary! From the top, you can see Magnetic Island, Townsville’s Port, the city, surrounding suburbs, and the distant mountain range.

But Castle Hill is more than just a scenic lookout; it has numerous walking trails that are used daily by both locals and visitors.

For those seeking a challenge, the infamous ‘Goat Track’ is your best bet. It’s only a kilometre long but steep, providing a test for many.

If you’re short on time or if you’d prefer the easiest option, you can drive up Castle Hill, the road up is about a 3km drive.

We highly recommend visiting Castle Hill during sunrise and sunset, the views are magical on a clear day.

2. Walk along The Strand

Another Townsville icon, this beautiful 2.2km esplanade is lined with tropical Queensland palm trees, perfect for exercising or enjoying some leisure time.

It offers several beautiful picnic spots, multiple kids’ playgrounds (including a FREE waterpark), exercise stations, BBQ facilities, and some of the best swimming beaches in Townsville.

There are two designated swimming spots on The Strand, both lifeguard-controlled and during stinger season (October to May), nets are placed in the water to help keep stingers out.

There are plenty of highly-rated cafes and restaurants along The Strand. We recommend Juliette’s for a morning coffee and a scoop of gelato. The Spirited Goat and Seaview Hotel are also great dining spots!

If you happen to be visiting Townsville on the first Friday of the month, don’t miss Townsville’s best night markets on The Strand. With over 180 stalls, there’s something for everyone, great food, gifts, souvenirs, and much more!
